CHAPTER VIII

GHOST INTERNET

Every Internet connection has a unique number--Internet Protocol (IP) address—issued by an Internet service provider (ISP), which is almost always registered to a legal name, address, and Tax Identification Number. This IP address is a unique identifying number used to monitor, track, and log all data of Internet connections. Every connection, every website, and every search is logged by an Internet service provider and is uniquely registered to a subscriber of the service. There is absolutely no privacy, no anonymity, and no security with a traditional Internet service provider.

Logged network traffic is essentially forensic evidence, which can and will be used, if required, by law enforcement and courts of law, against a suspect. It has already been discussed how to encrypt data traffic through an ISP with a VPN or an encrypted proxy. However, this method, although vastly preferable to a direct connection, does not fully address the principal problem—the ISP maintains a record of a subscriber’s legal name, address, date of birth, phone number, and Tax Identification Number. This is too much personal information. This chapter explores how to procure a ghost Internet service, thereby submitting no legal personal information.

Over the last few years, there has been a burgeoning interest in broadband Internet service; and even more recently, prepaid broadband service. Telecommunication companies, which in times past provided only mobile phone service, have more recently expanded their networks to provide Internet service. Rather than a traditional cable Internet or DSL connection, mobile network operators make it possible to access the Internet via base transceiver stations. Broadband service—whether via phone, USB stick, mobile hotspot, or USB tethering—normally requires a two year contract with a mobile network operator, including credit checks. However, this method of service differs little than a traditional cable or DSL connection—in neither service is there anonymity. Prepaid services have changed the rules of the game.1 No longer is it required to sign contracts and to submit to credit checks to have an Internet service—more importantly, it is now possible to have an anonymous Internet connection.

This is the ultimate freedom—the triumph of freedom of choice. Although there are sundry methods to procure a ghost Internet service, this chapter will discuss two: Prepaid broadband service (in its many forms); and a private fiber optics, cable or DSL Internet service. Nevertheless, ghost services are not replacements for anonymization services, including SSH, encrypted proxies, and VPNs. Ghost services cannot bypass IP restrictions and cannot encrypt data traffic.

MOBILE HOTSPOT

A mobile hotspot makes it possible for multiple persons (five or more) to share a WiFi signal. For this reason, a mobile hotspot is the most economical. Virgin Mobile offers an anonymous prepaid mobile hotspot with unlimited browsing, using 4G speeds, either with the $35.00 or $55.00 prepaid plans. However, pay close attention to the fine print. Virgin Mobile states that although 4G data is unlimited, it is capped at 10GB of browsing. More importantly, persons not living in a Sprint WiMAX 4G location are limited to the fixed data rates of 3G service: $35.
